WE'RE ALL WONDERS

The book was about a little boy who has one eye.

What I loved in this story is that people do not look beyond how he looks. They don't see that he can talk, run, bicycle, and more. All they see is that he's different and they ignore the similarities.

I recommend this book for everyone to read because they will gain their knowledge about respecting others,  seeing their similarities and accepting the way they are.

I give this book 5 stars because I think that everyone can learn a lesson about being kind to other people who are different from you.

The last goodbye...

I was wrapped around her in a hug, in an attempt to feel her soft, albeit cold skin, to the fullest, as tears streamed unheld from my eyes. I didn't want to believe she is not there anymore. I won't hear her voice again or feel her hug me with all her love.

I have lost a grandmother before. But that was 25 years ago. And I sparsely remember how I felt at that moment.I lost my only living grandparent today.

My Thamma (Paternal grandmother) used to sleep with me. I loved the stories she used to tell me. One day she said, "Joto golpo shonar ache shune ne. Ami ar beshi din thakbona ( Let me tell you all the stories you want to hear as I am not going to live long)". Of course I didn't believe her. She was fit as a fiddle. She passed away calmly in her son's arms all of a sudden, a week later.
The night after that, while going to sleep, I saw her standing at the foot of my bed and smiling. I probably just wanted to see her again , as I didn't get to say my goodbyes. In the playful shadows that the Krishnachura tree threw in the streetlight , I saw her there. Or maybe, she just wanted to see me once.

I didn't get to say my goodbyes to my Dida ( Maternal grandma) as well. I saw her for the last time almost 3 months ago. So when I saw her again, lying on a bed of flowers, engulfed in the mesmerising aroma of rajnigandha flowers , sandalwood and insense , I hugged her never to let her go. She looked peaceful and free of pain, sleeping like an angel. I took her face in my hands and felt as if she would just start talking. I massaged her hands and feet and her forehead. I heard no beats as I lay on her chest.
After a while, I got up and went to her room. It was odd not seeing her there as I stared at her bed. Suddenly the lights flickered.  After few minutes they flickered again, turning off and then on. People started wondering who did that. And I smiled 😊. It was her last good bye.

Visiting New Mexico, the land of enchantments

Thanksgiving was around the corner . Thanks to busy work schedules, we were left without any plans  for the coveted long weekend . So when our friends came over that evening ,we made an impromptu decision to take a roadtrip to New Mexico.

Why New Mexico ? Well, it's simple . We wanted to go someplace which didn't easily feature on Expedia's front page or our friends' Facebook pictures ! We wanted to see some place new...

Being the neighboring state to Texas, all we needed was a car. We pulled up all the information google could tell us , roughly chalked out an itinerary and booked a car online. Come the next morning we embarked upon our quest for the unseen and the pure joy of driving .

Three of the four of us were drivers and all of us loved road trips . We loaded up our car with food and gas and set on to cover 500 miles to Taos , NM before nightfall.

We were hoping to catch a few snow capped resorts for some snow adventures but the weather didn't make it seem likely. We booked a hotel online for that night so we knew we would have a warm bed waiting . By the time we reached it was pretty late and raining heavily. Deserted roads were alive only with the pittering-pattering rain. We went to sleep wishing for a better weather .

The morning surprised us with a very romantic snowfall. We walked around our hotel, mesmerized by the sheer beauty of a place which could have been in another century , an old civilization.

We lazily walked to the dining hall to be greeted by a lavish breakfast , complete with fullsome variety of local delicacies made to order, sitting and marveling the high ceilings and snowfall outside through the panoramic large windows.

We were so in love with the place that we decided to explore Taos and stay the night at the same hotel.

This was our lazy vacation. We pulled up our boots to explore the wonders of the place. In about 4 miles, was the San Francisco de Asis Mission Church . Its said to be "one of the most photographed and painted churches in the world", and now we knew why!

After a very scenic drive through the town of Taos, we reached the Taos Peublo World Heritage site .

The pueblos are considered to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States.

The settlement was built between 1000 and 1450 CE, on either side of Rio Pueblo de Taos, also called Rio Pueblo and Red Willow Creek, a small stream that flows through the middle of the pueblo compound.

It was a village of mud cottages. While some of them housed little curio shops, many of them fashioned artifacts of old beliefs or decorative pieces. Set against a backdrop of a beautiful mountain range, little bridges criss-crossing the Red Willow Creek, graveyards with tonnes of history, the old churches, the boxed houses and the people , successfully make the place a land of enchantments.

The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge was our next stop. The below picture says it all.

After a fulfilled day, we went on to explore the night life of Taos downtown. Since this was a month before Christmas, we got to see the 'Luminaria' or 'Farolito'. The quiet town was beautifully decorated with thousands and thousands of small paper lanterns and lights, lined up in rows on buildings, roadsides and lawns to create beautiful patterns. Farolitos are candles set inside paper bags containing sand. It was truly a sight to behold!
A delicious dinner at a local diner was a cherry on the cake that day .

Relaxed after a good night's sleep, the next day we bade good bye to Taos and started south. After 2.5 hours we reached Sandia Peak. Sandia Peak Tramway has the world's third longest single span. It is North America's longest aerial tram. A lovely sunset on the city of Albuquerque below was a serene highlight.

After covering 300+ miles since morning, we stayed the night at a little town called Alamogordo, near the White Sands National Monument.

The next morning was another adventure of its own kind, as we drove into the white land of gypsum.

Picnic tables at White Sands National Monument.

Miles and miles of white glistenening sand lay around us in hills, waves and dunes, cool and comfortable beneath our feet. Desert vegetation dotted the land. There were artistically constructed pathways for bikers and strollers, to preserve the flora and fauna.

The White Sands National Monument is in the Tularosa Basin. Surrounded by mountains , it is a field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. It is the largest gypsum dune field in the world.

We saw little kids sandboarding on the dunes. We rolled ,slided and ran on the waves. We laughed and clicked and giggled in the sands and made little castles and tunnels.

After an exhilerating time, we drove home overnight for 600 miles. Beautiful moments and new found friendships wove their own brand of magic, a treasure we hold ever since our visit to New Mexico, the land of enchantments.

Cheers to the four of us!

A loss

Today, while on a call with my dad, I got to know that my Guitar guruji from my childhood had left for his heavenly abode. I had not been in touch with him for many years now but the news shocked me and left me with sadness.

I had been really young when I started learning Guitar, probably in Std5. He was the senior Guruji who came from Ranchi few days a week to take few classes. I just remember that he loved from from the first day. He would question us on taals(beats) and lay(rhythms) and I was always the first to answer (I had the added advantage of having that knowledge from my dance classes that my mother took). It also worked in my favor that I was the youngest in class, where there were studests even from college. But the best part was, I loved math and he made taal and lay feel like math problems, which I loved to resolve. He would teach us various raagas and favourite part was the 'jhaala'. I remember our whole group used to play so well that it often used to rain when we played the raaga 'Malhar'.

He promoted us to many out-of-state competitions and functions. Learning from him was an amazing experience. I remember we used to touch our Guruji's feet for his blessings at the beginning and end of every class. It actually used to feel like being in a temple of learning.

After many years , even when I could not continue my guitar lessons, he used to come as a judge for my dance examinations. I heard later that he used to say he loved watching my dance. Coming from him, that was a big compliment.

Today on hearing this news, I feel sad. Dance and music have always been as close to me as my existence. And today I lost a teacher from my childhood years. This is a loss to all who survived him, but I have these memories to cherish my teacher.

It's a deal!

As Indians, the instinct to bargain is rooted deep into our psyche . Be it for vegetables, hawker food, buying a vehicle or a house, we bargain still we strike a deal. It is necessary and even expected in the market. Sometimes, it does turn funny :).

I happen to remember this one time, on a train to Jalpaiguri, my brother started pining for one of those Chinese handheld videogames. I reluctantly enquired the price.
The hawker said "You are getting it dirt cheap, I will give it to you for 950/-."
I: " I will give you 50/- for it".
And then the discussion went on and on until he came down to Rs.100 :). But finally I told him to keep moving, as I was determined on 50/-. My brother was like 'you never wanted to get it in the first place!'

Another incident comes to my mind about this very lovable lady at Howrah station. With a lot of luggage, she was looking for a coolie ( people who carry luggage ) when one of them came to her.
Lady: " How much will you charge till platform 12?"
Coolie : " Saatth rupiah ( 60 rupees)"
Lady : " Saat rupiah kyun? Abhi to pichle hafte bhara paanch rupiah tha !!! (Why seven rupees? Only last week the rate was five rupees!!! ;) "
Coolie : ??!!!???!!!!!!!

After all, quoting Benjamin Franklin -  "A penny saved is a penny earned."  ;) !

Instinctively yours ...

I woke up in the morning to find my baby crabbier than yesterday. This isn't how she generally is, she is a happy child. She had been running a temperature last evening. Little fingers drew my attention to the 2 boils on the leg. The first thing on my mind - 'Oh God, please let it just be heat rash and not chicken pox!'

The next thing we know, the pediatrician confirms my worst fear, despite the crossed fingers!

Why? Oh why did that have to be my first thought??!! What are the odds of a 9 month old contracting chicken pox?!

I have seen this happen too many times! My premonitions about her often come true, be it with an unforeseen allergy, an unusual remedy, a sudden move or things like if she would have dimples (before her birth)! My instincts almost never lie. Many a times I am able to prevent accidents, fix issues or just note a funny moment, thanks to that!

I remember an incident from almost a decade ago. Daily home calls were not the norm around then, more like once a week. It had been just a day or two since I had last called home. I had not been feeling well, just a fever but I was waiting to know if it was worse before troubling my parents. However, lying alone on the bed of my paying guest accommodation at Chennai (India) I suddenly thought of my mother. Just then my phone rang. I was so happy to see the 'Home' number on it and as soon as I picked it up my mom says ' Are you feeling ok? I just felt you are not, so thought of checking.” And she was almost 1800 KMs(Kilometers) away!

What else but a mother's instinct - hardly ever overrated!

I am sorry...

Sorry ...

It's a small word. But when really meant, it can melt the stoniest of hearts. It's also a word that's often thrown around carelessly, devaluing it and it's intent. It's also one of the toughest words to say. But why so?

Apology requires acceptance of our fault, intentional or otherwise. And that's not an easy thing to do. It requires being logical, understanding the other person's perspective, assume the possibility of the worst( we being wrong!) and then having enough guts to take up the responsibility.

I recall an incident from my childhood. I was around 8 or 9 years old then. The week of our story , I happened to be the 'Monitor' (a person appointed by the teachers to 'manage' the other kids) of my class. That day after returning home , I realized I hadn't seen my Monitor badge for a while. After searching a lot I concluded to have lost it. Now losing the badge meant informing parents and in turn getting scolded as I would need to pay Rs 5/- as penalty charges. So in order to avoid it all, I requested my Thamma ( Paternal Grandma) to please give me the Rs 5/- and hide this from my parents.

What my Thamma did next surprised me. Here goes the conversation that left me surprised.

Thamma: I will give you the money, but why do you want to hide it from your parents ?

I: If I tell them, I will get scolded !

T: Why will they do that?

I: Because I 'lost' the badge Thamma!

T: Why do you think you lost it?

I: I probably kept it somewhere and now I don't remember where. Or someone stole it :( .

T: Well you can't do much if someone steals it but u can keep it carefully at a safe place, correct?

I: Yes Thamma .

T: But this time your mistake was about being negligent. And if your parents scold you for that, accept it like you just did, and apologize. And try to be more careful in future . But don't be scared of making mistakes or accepting them. Just plan to rectify them going forward.

A scolding or hiding would probably have put me on a defensive mode, or worse, led to stealth. I am glad I was encouraged in the right direction in a positive way.

As I see it, an apology is best accompanied by forgiveness, specially if the person is really at fault, as Dumbledore says , 'People find it far easier to forgive others for being wrong , than for being right!' ;)

That misty morning…

I woke up from a dream, into a dream…

Eyes opening to the soft touch of the first light , the windows beckoned me, promising a sight so rare … I stepped out of the door, into the cool embrace of the heavy mist. There was but just one color… the world was orange around me!

The orange world as the day began

The lazy morning laid her misty mantle over the endless lake. There was no beginning…. no end … the earth had merged with the sky…

The lamps fell asleep …. with the rising sun … Leaving dew drops  from the night

As I walked along the shoulder of the waters , something other than the cold gave me shivers…. the silence mystified me . There was peace … all around…. I got goosebumps…

The cold, the mist, the silence and me

I wished to freeze in time…. to hold on to the moment… I was so in love. The slanting rays kissed the waters, scattering millions of diamonds on it ….

I got on the dock of the boat and sat down , hanging and swaying my feet as I breathed in the beauty, the calm of the surrounding….  I could now see the vague edges of the lake, the mist was slowly clearing up….

Eyeing the rising sun… from the dock

I gazed into the water below my feet…. I saw a happy girl, swinging her feet , humming a familiar tune…. Her eyes twinkled, shining to the rising sun, enjoying her secret moment before the world wakes up around her, that misty morning….

Cheers to the Three years!

As we complete three years of our wedded life, three wonderful years of loving , fighting and making-up, three years of knowing and understanding each other , I would like to say 'Thanks'!

Thanks for being there for me and with me whenever I needed you...
Thanks for putting up with me and even my sporadic irrational outbursts...
Thanks for dreaming with me and making them come true...
Thanks for being my partner-in-crime...
Thanks for giving me your love...
Thanks for the best gift ever - Zoey...
Thanks for not being perfect, but being perfect for me ...
Thanks for being such a wonderful, supportive husband to me and such an amazing Father to our princess .... I love you!
